Okay so tonight it’s another soap box one, I may start tagging them actually… good call me!
So Soap box out, up on top and away we go…
Is it just me, or are there an inordinate number of “Only For Geniuses” posts floating about on Farcebook at the moment?
You know the ones… they generally go along the lines of…
2 = 6
3 = 12
4 = 20
5 = 30
9 = ?
Now, call me old fashioned (please don’t) but quite frankly, if this is all it takes to be a genius where the hell is my PhD in astrophysics and why has no one contacted me about solving the mysteries of the universe?
I mean seriously, could these posts be any more ironic?
What they should be titled is “Only for anyone with an ability in maths equal to the average 11 year old”!!
Don’t get me wrong, there are some of these types of post which are a lot harder and quite honestly would be a challenge, those I don’t mind so much in that they offer the opportunity to test yourself but I still wouldn’t comment and I’ll explain why shortly.
Aren’t you a clever boy
Now I’m really not trying to offend anyone or say “hey dummy you can’t do maths”.
Some people can, some people cant. Some people enjoy maths others don’t.
My wife for instance is one of the most creative people I have ever met. I am not, as the turdy-bird I made when I was 10 proves beyond any shadow of a doubt!!
I enjoy maths and logic problems. My wife does not.
No, we’re all different and that’s fine.
The thing is, the people who are not good at maths are not going to try and answer it. They don’t enjoy maths they avoid it when possible. Yet these sums are easy for someone who does do maths so where’s the challenge?
The challenge is nothing to do with ability and everything to do with our need for interaction and socialisation.
We answer these things because it invites others to do so and we all love to prove someone wrong should they dare to put in what we know to be an incorrect answer, right?
Just a bit of harmless fun
The thing is, a lot of the time they really aren’t just a bit of fun.
At best, when you comment on them or share them you increase the social ranking of the page or person who originally posted it.
This means that they are more likely to show up in your feed again. Which in turn means they are more likely to get click-throughs to their page / profile and from there earn advertising revenue.
You’re helping to dumb down the internet people!!
Worst case scenario, the owner of the post not only get access to your profile when you click them they get access to all your friends profiles as well!!
So people before you decide to comment on one of these posts in the future, please, think about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it and whether you’re happy to share your details with the owner of the original post.
Personally I think I’ll pass… it’s 90 by the way… the answer 😉
If you want a more in-depth article about these damn things then you could do worse that checkout this post: http://cosmobiologist.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/only-for-geniuses-no-finding-answer.html
